Not much to do with the picture.

It has been a while since my last post - my apologies. Since that last post, Morgen has begun to babble, roll both directions, and show that she is thinking about squirming. She also imperiously and frequently demands to be helped into a standing position so that she can explore her world by tottering around at a run. I think we've got temper tantrums in our future.

But the real reason for this post has nothing to do with Morgen or her picture. I've got to ask you something - will you humour me with a response?

As you know, I'm heading back to school in early May. As you may not know, I need to make a dissertation topic switch. I still love my old topic (connections between knowledge of the body and music theory) but it's too unwieldy for me to tackle right now. Should I study:

1) Music in Outer Space (history of music in international space exploration) OR

2) Orpheus and the Canadian Singer-songwriter (modern resonances of mythology...possible case study is Leonard Cohen).

I'm deliberately not going to explain either of these any further....I'm looking for gut reactions here, because I value such things.

First of all ... is your daughter wearing bloomers? That would be so cool! I'd say (without a doubt) go for Leonard Cohen, bring in a little bit of Joni Mitchell (You know you want to!) and have fun! I know Outer Space would be a possibility, but let's face it, you already missed the latest recruitment deadline for the Canadian Space agency astronaut program, so you have lots of time to return to that later.

And, I never heard about the original topic ... very cool as well!

I have to admit, I am a little jealous.

Actually, she's wearing a "skort," purchased by her Auntie Nicole. It is a really cool little thing.
Academia is still waiting for you, Caroline. I can hear the siren song of the ivory tower calling your name even now....

My vote is for Leonard Cohen. Maybe Jian will interview you on Cue/Q.

But I thought your original topic was the correlation between science and music? I think the body and music has a lot of potential (potential to become a dancing dissertation and I am always in favour of those).

They are both great! You keep coming back to your obsession with music in outer space (space, space, space...) - that may be a sign. If it were me, I'd totally go with anything that lets me talk about the Canadian singer-songwriter. If you need to do any more participant observation, count me in!

Um, gut reaction to #1 is, "Seriously?" But between the two, go with number 1, for sure. Canadian singer-songwriters? Please ... Do only Canadians read this blog? Help, Minnesota Grandma!

Music in Outer Space. You can probably work Mr. Cohen into that if you feel the urge...

My gut feeling is option #2. Something about it says "Jessica" to me. How gorgeous is your little girl? We need to get together soon so I can have more Morgen time.

Space is more immediately exciting for me as a topic (for all my love of both myth and Cohen).

Believe me the blog is able to filter across the boarder without any problem. But Angelia, I just don't get it. So how can I give an opinion. And Jessica shouldn't feel bad because I didn't get Gavin's topic either. Oh woes me, to be so far outside the Ivory Tower. Sometimes the moat is as good as it will get for some of us. Space, mythology, music, body, how about Dylan (a Minnesota boy you know) vs Cohen?

I read as well (non-Canadian). However, I don't know that I have a great answer for your question Jessica. I think all three are a little fascinating and random all at the same time.

Flip a coin?!?

MN Grandma - I totally get your answer. Yay Dylan! Jessica - you just have to do what will keep you happy (for however many years it takes) - no other opinion really matters. I'm very interested to know what your decision is, but not really sorry to be less than helpful in your choosing.
If you want, I'll give you my gut reactions after you make your choice. :)

My vote is for Music in Space. you could talk about the actual use of music in space (what did the astronauts listen to, what music, if any, was sent out in hopes of intergalactic reply), and compare it to what we believe space music is due to media exposure (Star Trek, Space Oddessey 2001, etc- you know that long-noted woodwind/high brass sound)
I believe in Star Trek 4 (the one with the whale) they use Rhapsody In Blue as back music for whale scenes... Ooh- this could be fun!
