Last year, Gavin and I shared a bottle of wine, then slung our portable, folding beach chairs over our shoulders and walked down to the lake to view the expensive fireworks for free - albeit at a distance and so without the exciting boom, crack, and sizzle. We watched the moon, orange and gigantic, come up over the water, and then when it dwindled to it's normal size and pearly colour we walked home in the dark amongst a crowd of other happy Canadians. We had sand in our toes and no plans to start our family. What a difference two months made for us! By August our thoughts about that had totally changed.
This year's Canada Day was as different from last year's as it could possibly be. I put Morgen in the only outfit of the right colour and size (unfortunately, it said GAP right across her chest and sort of made her look like a little boy), and we both tried to entertain her as she spent a very wakeful day cooing and gurgling. We pulled our stroller out and took a walk around the block. We ordered pizza, taking turns eating or bouncing and walking our baby, who still didn't want to take her nap. The sounds of neighbourhood fireworks filtered in through the windows. Morgen somehow forgot how to go to sleep, I think, and didn't settle until midnight. With all the fussing and bouncing and resultant sore knees and parental angst, it was still a beautiful day. Sorry to be so sappy - but I am a new mom after all!
